Saint Markus is a fantastic artist who not only has featured in our Stickerbomb books but he's been part of some of our group shows across South-East Asia. Hailing from Sao Paulo, Brazil, we had a quick email catch up to see how things are.
How is Sao Paulo now and how is everything with Covid and the art scene?
Unfortunately, Brazil was poorly managed in this pandemic crisis, the federal government denied until the last second the option of lockdown and vaccine. São Paulo is the 4th largest metropolis in the world and had a different management, fortunately the arrival of the vaccine was fast and so it wasn't worse in deaths.
The art scene came together a lot, I think the biggest theme of the scene was against the antivax government that is in power, I also saw many works aimed at mental health in times of lockdown, very current and necessary themes.
Has a lot changed for you?
Many things have changed, i work as an art director in advertising and in the lockdown we work 100% of the time from home and we saw that it is possible (unfortunately Brazil is very behind in this subject, here the bosses loves to see you working in person at the company, simply to have the power to command you).
In terms of relationships, I see that there was a lot of distance from people (which is funny because we Brazilians love to talk and meet new people). Now everything is working more flexible around here, and it's funny how people have lost their relationship skills, a lot of people are still further away, I think it's something that gets better with time, but it was a shock for everyone.
What are you working on at the moment?
At the moment I'm learning new art styles, I'm really enjoying making small animations and I want to learn stop-motion soon (which is my lifelong passion).
Any plans for 2022?
My biggest plan is to travel the world, meet new people, discover new arts, new stories and everything in between.
I believe that all this contributes a lot to my artistic growth.
